I dig,
delve,
when I can,
within,
peeling back
the many layers
beginning with my
brown skin.
Discovering things
about myself
through excavations
of detritus and ore.
Searching for
hidden gems,
precious mettle,
for something,
anything,
more.
Sometimes finding
nothing,
but fools gold,
sometimes deeper truths
for you to behold
about the nature
of the You and the I,
about our sameness,
about the lies.
Always surprised
by what my inner work
yields,
what I have,
over time,
buried, concealed.
And how
perceptions of my
outer self,
my superficial identity
reveal more
about you
than they do
about me.
