I have entered
the long night
with my eyes
open and tearing
from the cold wind,
and indifferent hearts
that do not
recognize their brethren
garbed in other faiths,
from foul emanations
of a dark oligarch,
fear and loathing,
suffuse the light
of the torch
in the harbor
that once welcomed
weary souls
day and night.
Watching them
from the saftey
of peepholes,
and skewed news
that distort their
image,
making them appear
other.
Hearts now watching
with jaundiced eye,
ignorant of their
need
so like
yours and mine.
