sailing from the Garden Isle
with pigs from the sea

When I read this story about the wonderful island of Okinawa, Japan where I was stationed for a year, the title begged a poem. I chose the Tanka poem form because sometimes haiku is just not enough.

I was struck by how the lessons of history are buried in the dust of subsequent prosperity. The displaced populations from the wars all around the world are being victimized a second time by neglect.

We rationalize our cowardice with xenophobia, forgetting the foundation of our own beginnings.
