As bright autumn leaves
cascade from treetops
descending to earth,
they paint the wooded
air in equinox
colors, and skirt the tree.
Blanketing the ground
in their découpage,
in homage to change,
as John Barley Corn
must wither and die,
nourish dormant grass,
climb the winter trees
to flush the spring buds
on tips and branches
in resurrection.
