Floating on dark water
on a still, moonless night
wondering where hides the moon
in the sea of sparkling lights.
What mystery cloaked in shadow
beyond my meager vision,
what purpose serves the darkness,
in which I have no decision.
I trail my hand in the black mirror
the coolness soothing tired fingers.
I see the brightness of stars reflected,
and yet the darkness lingers.
Deep within me is an echo
pulsing with persistent resonance
calling me to some greater meaning
to a life that has some relevance.
There are billions of others here with me,
other lives adrift, this boat I’m in.
Watching the stars to find our way home,
awaiting the sunrise with hearts sanguine.
