Levee walls did
succumb.
Chasing evacuees
while stranding some.
Turbulence undermined
its fundament
after decades of
erosion.
The collapse,
a catastrophic
explosion.
Buried embankments
in watery grave.
Rooftops breached
by climate changed
waves.
Inland
crashed the ocean,
swallowed bayous
basins, and bays.
Expectorated
the permanent underclass
that, surprisingly,
stays.
Memories remain,
as does the stain.
Insulted injuries,
continued growing
pains.
Dark shadows,
cast by
tourist distractions,
conceal gentrifications
overlooked by
Urban Planners,
political factions.
Economic apartheid,
segregation via
what people can’t afford.
Conspicuously absent,
civic improvements,
in N’Orleans
Ninth Ward.
