Shimmering thermals rise
from baking asphalt,
curtains distorting sight.
Cars disappear
behind the veil,
melt in the distant
black ribbon.
Flanking fields teem
with assorted wildlife.
Sentinel stalks
witness and wave,
conscious of the
pending scythe,
stoically awaiting
dark threshers.
Cacophonous hum of wings,
Imagined crunch of
a million mandibles.
Felt in the moment,
micro and macro of life.
Balanced on the edge
of self-consumption,
growth ordained
by the strong,
the will to survive.
Interspecies conflicts,
rise and fall
with the tide of time.
