When a society fails to effectively socialize it’s citizens and engage them in such a way as to add to its growth and vibrancy, the society as a whole loses. There are more Americans of African descent incarcerated in the U.S. than in South South Africa at the height of Apartheid. There are MILLIONS more who are not of that ethnicity incarcerated as well. Prisons are being built with the latest technology while schools don’t have enough money for books, desks, and maintenance of the physical plant. Satellite classrooms dot the surrounding area of what was once a playground at many of the public schools. These are essentially shacks with little comfort, no security and little in the way of what the teacher needs to educate, or the children to learn.
If you don’t believe this is a problem for you simply because you are not currently affected by it directly, please consider the following:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.
