My mind is pregnant
with ideas
that I give birth to
on the page.
Some,
not carried to
full term,
some lie stillborn
never to age.
Your eyes
breathe life
into them,
wake them,
from the dormancy
of my subconscious,
to germinate in yours
where they flower,
hybrids of understanding
and acceptance
that grow in the
fertile ground of
empathy and compassion,
watered by the fluidity
of consideration.

Relentless predator
stalking the savannah
of my mind.
I smell, taste,
and feel it,
but can see no sign.
And it’s
running—
       running me—
                 running me down
all the time.
All I can think
is to get away,
but the farther
I go,
the closer it feels,
the more it holds sway.
And if I surrender,
my spirit trembles.
Fear, in essence,
does little more
than dissemble.
It obfuscates truth
and distorts reason.
My fear plagues my heart
with visceral treason.
Fear is my shadow,
nonexistent without me
and the light.
I can close my eyes
to it,
but then all is lost
to the night.

sometimes i believe

all that holds me

together

is the crazy glue

i feel every crack

every fault line

                stressed

every chip on my

shoulder            a chunk

sweat pours down my

back

like liquid          fear

i can smell

rain

coming to pound me

into           dust

wash away my

pain

at least I hope it will

it must
